Sony micro four-thirds this few years' development has been recognized by all. Especially the full-frame micro four-thirds Sony A7 series has received a lot of praise from professional photographers and high-end photography enthusiasts. But is it still lacking in directly challenging single-lens reflex cameras? Now Sony seems to be determined to challenge single-lens reflex cameras head-on, what happened? What capital does Sony have for its direct challenge to single-lens reflex cameras?
Goodbye Single Lens Reflex! Hello Micro Four Thirds!
Single Lens Reflex is a type of camera with a single lens and a mirror that reflects light onto the viewfinder. In using Single Lens Reflexes we rely on optics to capture images, which means you see exactly what you're going to get through the viewfinder without any distortion or bias. However since Single Lens Reflexes are more complex than Micro Four Thirds systems there is no mirror flipping up during exposure so they tend to be heavier and bulkier.
Micro Four Thirds on the other hand uses live-view technology where the image sensor captures real-time images as you frame your shot. This makes it easier for photographers who shoot portraits or landscapes because they can preview their shots before taking them.
I use Sony A7R with Zeiss Sonnar T* E 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens for portrait shooting and I find that it's very convenient when framing my shots especially when I need low angles or high angles because I don't need an external viewfinder.
For example while shooting in Spain Seville Square with my Sony A7R equipped with Zeiss Sonnar T* E 55mm f/1.8 ZA lens at low angle took me only seconds compared to using an SLR which would require me getting down on my knees or lying flat on the ground which could be dirty and uncomfortable.
The same goes for wide-angle photography where focus performance becomes important especially in wedding photography where subjects move around frequently and often unexpectedly requiring fast autofocus performance even at wide angles.
For instance during wedding photography in Hainan Island China using my Sony A7S with Vario-Tessar T* E 16-35 mm f/4ZA OSS lens at ISO3200 under dim lighting conditions captured excellent results without much noise thanks to its high sensitivity mode making it ideal for indoor weddings.
In addition many people believe that extreme cold temperatures below -20°C will cause issues like battery drain but surprisingly enough even under such harsh conditions my Sony A7S did not malfunction nor suffer from battery drain despite being used outdoors in snowy conditions during a photo shoot in Hokkaido Japan proving its robustness against extreme weather conditions.
